Westside Community Schools – NWEA MAP Information
Third – Ninth Grade Students to Take the Measures of Academic Progress® (MAP®) tests.
During the 2017/2018 school year, your child will take tests called NWEA Measures of Academic Progress® (MAP®) Growth Tests. This assessment tool is used to determine your child’s instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year and from year-to-year in the areas of reading and math.
MAP® assessments are untimed, but each will take approximately 45-60 minutes to complete. MAP® Growth Tests are aligned with Nebraska State Standards and provide early projections for college and career readiness as measured by the ACT®. MAP® Growth Tests are unique in that they adapt to be appropriate for your child’s level of learning. If your child answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. This results in a detailed picture of what your child knows and is ready to learn—whether it is on, above, or below their grade level. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing.
MAP® will let teachers know where a student’s strengths are and if help is needed in any specific areas. Since MAP Growth Tests provide immediate and accurate information about your child’s learning, it’s easy for teachers to identify students with similar scores that are generally ready for instruction in similar skills and topics, and then plan instruction accordingly.
Teachers will use this information to help them guide instruction in the classroom. MAP® Growth Interim assessments will be administered during the course of the year. A summative MAP® assessment will replace the Nebraska State Accountability (NeSA) assessments at the elementary and middle-level in the Spring.
